This week, I was idly browsing through the Doctor Who entries on Wikipedia, as you do when waiting for ink makers to return your calls. I’m just about old enough to remember real blue police boxes on the streets, which is more than can be said for Billie Piper.
Doctor Who’s police box is called a Tardis, which stands for Time and Relative Dimensions in Space. It travels through three dimensions – up-down, left-right, forward-back – plus time; the fourth dimension.
Sadly, the Tardis is fictional, so what’s the print connection? Printing, logic says, is a strictly two-dimensional medium. Print has height and width, but no significant depth, apart from the ink film, while the only time effect is curling around the edges of the page.
