First off, we hope you like the new take on the theme music.
John promotes some future talks he has coming up: Brookdale Computer Users Group talk on open source software (especially GIMP, Inkscape and Scribus) and server technologies in March, Trenton Computer Festival in April, and Princeton Public Library Tuesday Tech Talk on using technology to lose weight.
Brian will be returning to the stage when he plays organ and — believe it or not — accordion for his friend Christian Beach on Feb. 2, 2008, at Paul’s Tavern in Lake Como (formerly South Belmar), NJ.
Howard Jones recently performed at the Dennis Flyer Memorial Theatre in Blackwood, NJ, on Jan. 18. Brian was there and wrote this recap on his Tandem With the Random blog (includes videos!).
Viygo.com, a timeline Web site, is discussed by John….CORRECTION (9:33 a.m. ET, 1/24/08): In the podcast, John says viygo.com is “an implementation of MIT’s timeline API.” However, we received an e-mail today from one of viygo.com’s creators, Matt Collins, saying:

I would like to let you know we have nothing to do with the Simile project at MIT…Viygo is built on a database we designed and reads and writes to our database. We also use third party data when possible such as RSS feeds and open APIs.

John also talks about the concept of Library 2.0.

After being reminded of BEST Products by friend Katie Musar, Brian takes a look back at the quirky architecture of BEST’s featured showrooms: SITE’s BEST project site and a Metropolis Magazine story.
A recent CNET News.com blog post cites a Time magazine article on the return of vinyl long-playing records (aka LPs).
Blogger Don Reisinger recently spoke to an RIAA spokesperson and…well…let’s just say the recording industry just keeps making it easier to hate it.
But Ars Technica reports the end of the RIAA, as we know it, may actually be near…cross your fingers!

Light in Winter ’08 in Ithaca, N.Y., this weekend

Just a reminder…the Light in Winter festival takes place in Ithaca, N.Y., this weekend, Jan. 18-20.

Light in Winter is a weekend-long festival that celebrates and explores the connections between science and the arts. Lectures, exhibits, interactive workshops and concerts take place throughout the weekend at multiple venues in the greater Ithaca area. The events of the weekend are tied together by a common theme—the 2008 festival will explore “Identity.” Money-saving ticket packages can be purchased in advance, and tickets for individual events are also available in advance or at the door.

John talks about a big e-mail project at Rider University in which all users are moving over to Yahoo-owned Zimbra.
John also spent some time over the holiday break with friends at Triumph Brewing Company in Princeton, N.J. While there, he found some new beers to enjoy.

eMusic is in the news. The No. 2 online music retailer after iTunes may have some indie labels threatening to leave the service. However, eMusic has also struck a deal with AT&T to allow wireless customers to download songs directly to their handheld devices…AND download free copies of the same songs to their PCs.
With Macworld days away, Apple is in the news. First, the company reportedly will begin renting DVDs from Fox through the iTunes Store. Also, there is a rumor going around that Apple will be launching its own music label…with Jay-Z at the helm! (But take that rumor with a grain of salt.)
